Why aren’t there more women in filmmaking? There are fewer female directors and crew members compared to their male counterparts in film awards, and in top-grossing films which are in need of female representation so that women’s stories are told.
Employing women is simply a starting step in addressing this problem; it does not solve it. It’s crucial, as roles played behind the camera can often influence how women are portrayed on screen.
In this interview, filmmaker Rea Lilly who makes films about women for women addresses the issue from her personal experience working as a brown woman in an industry dominated by white men.
