Lebanese Grill

2 Mins read

As a student of LCC living down Old Kent Road, my journey to school is accompanied by a plethora of passing restaurants. Here, finding a diverse range of food is effortless; some restaurants constantly have customers while some seem to keep their doors closed. One restaurant in particular has caught my eye, as there always seems to be a queue of patient and hungry South Londoners. No matter the time of day (given the restaurant’s hours are noon to 2 am) customers seem to want whatever it is that Lebanese Grill has to offer. Of course, I had to try Lebanese Grill, at 173 New Kent Road, for myself to see if the hype aligns with the quality.

At first glance, Lebanese Grill seems like a hole in the wall eatery, just like the surrounding restaurants. Honestly, that description is not far from the truth. Lebanese Grill is takeaway only (no indoor seating) and displays a large menu above the open doors, through which you can watch the staff prepare the dishes. I arrived at a seemingly slow time, about 2 pm, and waited for only two people to order.

After scanning the menu, which displayed options such as shish-kebabs, chicken wraps, and halloumi, I decided to leave the decision in the hands of the staff. As it reached my turn to order, I asked what their most popular dish was. The friendly worker suggested the half-grilled chicken. I chose to pair it with a bed of white rice and a side salad containing lettuce, onions, red cabbage, and pickled jalapenos. The crispy chicken breast was drizzled with what looked like mayo and sriracha.

The total came out to be seven pounds, a pleasant surprise. Other options on the menu seemed to be of a similar price; a beef burger for four pounds or a large lamb shawarma wrap for six pounds. A great place if you’re looking to spend less than ten pounds.

After the two minutes that I waited to receive my order in a labelled plastic bag, I began the walk back to my flat. For me, walking distance means a perfect post-night-out meal. The first bite was a generous surprise, as the chicken was perfectly flavourful and the rice decently seasoned. The sauces on the chicken added a lovely kick of spice; the perfect amount of spice for me. The salad was a little bland, but mixing it all together was a great decision. Soon, my belly was full and I was absolutely content with my meal. I now understand why so many people have and will continue to queue for Lebanese Grill.
