“Can white men jerk?” 

Growing up in a Jamaican household, Caribbean food is more than just a meal to me — it’s a deep-rooted connection to home, culture, and comfort. Naturally, that means I’ve developed a pretty critical palate when it comes to Caribbean cuisine. Peckham, with its vibrant multicultural food scene, is a dream for someone like me who loves exploring different flavours. But sometimes, nothing beats the craving for something familiar — something that takes me back to my roots. 

It was one of those classic Friday hot summer days in South London. Sunglasses on, music in the air, and a desire to soak in the energy of the city. My mum was visiting, and as we strolled through the buzzing high street of Peckham, I remembered a pub I had seen on TikTok. Curiosity got the best of me, so I suggested we check it out. 

So, we took a quick 10-minute walk from Peckham Rye station, leading us to the Prince of Peckham, where food is served by the pop-up restaurant White Men Can’t Jerk, so we went in asking the question “Can white men jerk?”  The pub was bright with two amazing murals on the front and back of the building, the place was filled with laughter and that summer vibe we were in search of. Due to the lovely weather, we sat outside in the front, and the space just radiated positive energy. We were warmly greeted by a waiter who handed us menus and struck up some friendly conversation. Just in time for happy hour, we placed our order for cocktails, ready to settle in and enjoy the vibe. 

It was a quick decision for my mum and me both craving jerk chicken, so we got two jerk chicken meals, which come with jerk chicken, rice and peas, and coleslaw, for £15. When it came, we were so excited to just dig in!  But what encapsulated us was the homemade sauces they brought out on the plate, the pineapple scotch bonnet jam, and jerk BBQ sauces. It is so different but such a great use of mixing important flavours from Caribbean cuisine, though not the most authentic jerk I’ve ever had, the influence of Caribbean flavours and fusion on their menu such as their jerk burger which I have since tried and loved!  

Couldn’t recommend Prince of Peckham more, the food, the drinks and the vibe. If you are in Peckham, you MUST visit! 

And, yes, I guess they can.
