Que Chidos Tacos

1 Mins read

Nestled in the heart of Southwark, between Walworth and Bermondsey, Que Chidos Tacos is a vibrant, family-owned Mexican restaurant that delivers big on flavour, authenticity, and atmosphere. The owner, Cristian, alongside his parents, are the faces of the restaurant and the chefs behind the extensive menu. While the exterior might not be too flashy, the unmistakable scent of sizzling meat and freshly pressed tortillas drifting through the air will catch your attention.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with lively Latin music and very subtle decorations, giving it that extra touch of authenticity that comes from refraining from stereotypical decorations other restaurants incorporate. While the space is small, it’s spaced out enough to not be seated too close to other diners, making for a homey and intimate dining experience.

The menu is packed with Mexican food staples, from tacos and quesadillas to enchiladas, caldos and other snacks — all bursting with well-seasoned fillings. Vegetarians and vegans won’t feel left out either with their wide range of alternatives.

Between two we shared: al pastor tacos, beef birria tacos, and chicken enchiladas. If a Mexican restaurant’s al pastor tacos are good, you know the place is authentic and their perfectly marinated pork with refreshing pineapple had the perfect balance of smokiness and sweetness. The birria tacos’ slow-cooked beef melted in our mouths along with its crispy, cheesy tortilla dipped into the juicy and rich consomme served in a teacup and while the chicken enchiladas were overshadowed by the former dishes, its flavorful chicken filling, rich and well-seasoned enchilada sauce, and generous amount of cheese, could have easily been the best dish in another restaurant.

All these dishes were also accompanied by a plate with different salsas and toppings like guacamole, coriander, tomato salsa, and habanero sauce. We also had to try their refreshing horchata, a traditional Mexican beverage made from white rice soaked in water, and it did not disappoint. The bill totalled to £20 per person and the price to quality and quantity ratio was no doubt worth it. This independent spot bringing real Mexican flavours is a must-visit.
